Herring Angus Cattle Rated By Texas A&M Program!

The Texas A&M University "Ranch to Rail" program is an information feedback system that allows ranchers to learn more about the genetics of their cattle as relates to profitability and the end product that the consumer desires. This year 37 producers placed 329 head in a feedlot to be fed, analyzed, processed, and sold with premiums and discounts. Information on the cattle were: Quality Grades, Yield Grades, Carcass Weight, Rib Eye Area, Fat, Carcass Value per Pound, Average Daily Gain, Feed Cost of Gain, Total Cost of Gain, and Net Value. The latter being the single most important, because it takes a combination of most of the others to achieve a profitable net value.

Only the producer is given results on his cattle. But, each receives the averages and ranges of all results of all the cattle on test. The net value of the entire group was between +$279.06 and - $96.54 per head. Our average was exactly+$279.06. All 15 of our cattle graded Choice or Prime.

Other cattle that we have sent to other feed lots have graded similar to these. It is important to mention that we kept the best for breeding and to sell to our customers for breeding. We were breeding for carcass when others were breeding elephants. Since l956, we have kept our eye on profit and the end product. The end product IS important in the long run!
